    I'm Drunk, I Love You

    ★★★½

JP Habac’s I'm Drunk, I Love You is, borrowing Julia Russell’s words in Original Sin (2001), "not a love story, but a story about love" (and a poignant one at that). What is striking about IDILY is its sobering take on unrequited love and the grueling life that is the friendzone, as seen through the relationship of Dio (Paulo Avelino) and Carson (Maja Salvador). While it pierces the heart to see Carson pine for someone who is beyond her reach no matter the proximity, the film boasts a promising soundtrack thanks to artists like Parokya ni Edgar, Johnoy Danao, Ebe Dancel, and Bullet Dumas, among others.

    Saving Sally

    ★★★

Saving Sally enthralls the viewers by interweaving two worlds, both as seen through the masterful gaze of Marty, a comic book artist and a hopeless romantic. The seamless integration of live action and animation in the film’s fabric is impressive. The film warms the heart as it delves into the unrequited love Marty had for Sally, with scenes punctuated by Nick’s intrusion in the unlikely pair’s story. It is ingeniously crafted within the span of a decade – if that is not enough reason to watch the film, I do not know what is.
