    Opus

I’ve seen Opus compared to films like The Menu and Midsommar, but the film plays more like a thriller version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The film is intriguing, entertaining and disturbing. However where Opus falls flat is in its deeper ideas, the examination of being an artist and the power it holds are undeveloped and confusing. Unfortunately, most of these deeper ideas are also delivered by John Malkovich who not only is horribly miscast here but also is…

    ★★★

Companion, while a fun ride always feels like it's holding back, in many aspects. First, the performances are the best part of the film. Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid carry this film with ease. I was caught off guard by how comedic the film was, it definitely featured some of the funniest scenes from a…

    Heretic

Heretic contains almost no jump scares, no ghosts or masked serial killers but manages to get my pulse racing more than most horror films in recent memory. The strong screenplay brilliantly constructs and then deconstructs the concept of religion, with monologues that held me on the edge of my seat. The film also does a great job of building dread as you slowly realize the trap our two missionaries have found themselves in. As the story progresses it explodes with various…
