Not a perfect movie, perhaps, but as a father of a son, this movie was perfectly calibrated to give me all the feels. Misty eyes? Absolutely.

The Father 2020
Disorienting and emotionally draining.
Hopkins is a force of nature, careening between charming, pity-inducing, and unnerving, and leaving you trying to make sense of the world right along with him.
Colman makes you feel every little stab of a heartbreak she feels.
I can honestly say that I didn’t know what was going on for much of this film - and still felt gutted at the end of it.

Promising Young Woman 2020
This movie was at its most entertaining when it was subverting narrative expectations, which it did often, and with relish. In her feature-film directorial debut, Emerald Fennell earns her Oscar nomination(s) with a wry wit, clever and darkly funny visual gags, and a colorful ready-for-insta aesthetic. I may be the only person to hold the opinion that Carey Mulligan (undoubtedly a talented actress) was miscast in this role, and I did have some quibbles with the movie’s timelines, but I’m not sure any of that really mattered, when the “Promising Young Woman” we should all be discussing is so clearly Fennell herself.
