Somehow went all these years without getting this movie spoiled, and wow is it a doozy. I’m a huge fan of The Handmaiden, so it was really interesting going back and watching one of his earlier films for the first time and seeing the earlier iterations of his style of storytelling and elevated pulp.

The Substance 2024
Easily one of my favorites of 2024. The Substance brings together a lot of my favorites vibes of the horror genre. It’s the body horror and depth of Cronenberg in his 70s/80s schlock era. Demi Moore is so obviously committed to her performance from the subtle to the over the top. I love the world building that creates a warped and grotesque fun house mirror look into our media and society. And it looks slick as hell to boot.

Trap 2024
Despite the fact that this may be a very expensive effort to launch his daughter’s music career, I think M. Night managed to have the self awareness to lean in to the goofiness his movies produce to make something fun and entertaining. Josh Hartnett is doing an unhinged combo of Norman Bates meets Hannibal Lecter that just works. Proving to me that sometimes the key to making M. Night good is the right central performance. I liked this one with no irony.
