No matter how many times I watch this, that first sequence where Caan has to get back to his room before she walks through the door still has me screeching. Masterclass in tension. Rest of the film is still super sturdy, super enjoyable, all of the side characters drawn with an admirable detail, I love the spicy police couple.

The Last of England 1987
So deliberate, brutal, beautiful, great to see something this restorative to my senses at the GFT - they even turned up the volume for this one!

If I was being extremely generous, I'd say that each subsequent English-language Bong film is getting worse on purpose; the compounded incoherency and hollow archetypes of each script successfully reflecting an increasingly maddening, meaningless, everything-everywhere-all-at-once-kinda world where ideas are zipping and zapping without any purchase and where depth of feeling is sought for solely by the heroes - the few and far between.
