Brings story back to post war roots. Godzilla is used sparingly but when on screen the creature is terrifying. Plays out like a horror film at times. SPFX HMU are amazing and rise to the spectacle. This film had a very jaws vibe when out at sea which I loved. very character and motivationally driven story with a lot of commentary on PTSD survivors guilt, American imperialism, and atomic bomb effects. Mostly compelling drama but B movie performances and delivery. Run time could have been shorter as some scenes slug along. Definitely the best Godzilla entry but that’s not saying much.
I love Sophie Thatcher. With that said this movie isn’t great. Or good for that matter. Kinda thought I was in for a deep exploration about the human condition and grief. What I got was standard jump scares and dark corridors. No substance but I love Sophie Thatcher I don’t care. She makes this movie watchable.
Scrooge meets Good Will Hunting. Warm uplifting and bittersweet. Alexander Payne captures this coming of age story beautifully.
Wish Tarantino meets Temu Tarantino
Wow, this movie is all over the place. I mean that literally as it’s told in non chronological order for no reason. This film is so far up its own ass it even had a title card stating it was filmed in 35MM. (The shots to Giovani Ribsisi credit are unique and impressive.) The acting and action is convincing as well. I just feel the movie was trying too hard at being clever and it just comes off as self indulgent and thoughtless. Nothing really pushing the hollow script forward.
