Give me a few rewatches and I might have a firm grasp on what happened.
I genuinely really liked this film. Frank is a perfectly despicable villain and really represents the scum beneath the surface of a small town, seeing Jeffrey getting pulled into that world against his will was incredibly compelling. The dialogue is also razor sharp, very witty, direct and funny yet with a valley's worth of interpretation with each major exchange.

The way this show loses its steam is absolutely devastating for me. Every single episode up until L's death is perfection, genuinely some of the most well built tension in television. But you can feel the moment the show doesn't know what to do without L and so gives the story 2 more of him without the appeal of the character.
It still is a must watch for anyone who likes anime, it just disappoints me how it lands.
I felt 0 connection to these people. Reading the Wikipedia on the gang probably would have been preferable.
Give me little robot guys and traumatized people, it's a working formula every time.
