CODA 2021
What in the white mediocrity is this?? Hollow, inauthentic, formulaic nonsense with each character being the lowest-hanging easy archetype and each plot point (towards the end, down to the very beat) being hilariously call-able. Could be a great choice for something to have on in the background to kinda-watch while hanging out with friends (except for some of the jokes that seem to be more at the expense of the deaf characters than anything else), but as a four-time Sundance award winner? In the Cut 2003
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The operating theme of IN THE CUT is stated toward the end of the film in a shot of an animatronic toy rat with a mustache singing a song by the Partridge Family: "I think I love you, so what am I so afraid of?"
Massively undersold as a sexy thriller, the murder mystery element of this film (while sufficiently grisly) is secondary to a more compelling and resoundingly truthful story about two people intensely desirous–but equally terrified–of love.
