I think Depp smoking and treating the book like shit it's just one of those many silly things that this film has on purpose. I think the mix between noir, occultism and goofiness somehow works well in this quite entertaining film (¿Chinatown + Rosemary's Baby?). Sometimes it has that 70s Polanski's vibe and I enjoyed very much.
