in a harrowing and desolate world, a girl still happily collects jars carrying that last bit of hope and tenderness. giving meaning to something meaningless. oddly comforting in a confrontational manner. inevitably tragic and lonely. very scarce in dialog yet meaningful and heavy with each delivery. thank you mamoru oshii. might need to think about this for a while and probably going to rewatch it. there is so much to say and feel about this.

"I can still see my money in your pocket... which is from the yield of my labour."

an allegory of the inhumane relationship dynamics between the institution and the individual, as well as the seductive power of capital toward the individual's urge to achieve autonomy. James Caan's performance was unhinged and unrelenting, great stuff. what a powerhouse of a film. everything about this is stylistic and fucking cool.

man what the fuck. probably Lynch's most daring, horrifying and incoherent jumble of surreal imagery ever created. it doesn't fully make sense but it's incredibly evocative. the portrayal of sexual exploitation isn't clear-cut or easy to grasp; instead, it's fragmented and scattered. trying to wrap my head around the film, every attempt of grasping its narrative just leads you to a dead end, so i sat back and just let the chaotic blend of imagery and sound wash over me, embracing it fully. just absolutely incredible work.
