I am so enamored with this film's cinematography. Especially the long shots.
I found this to be so moving, especially the character Yae, played magnificently by Sachiko Hidari.
I like how well the script explored money and what it entails.
To have money is to move freely and to be the pilot, not passenger, of one's own life. When we possess little money, we are in turn dispossessed of possibility, our avenues in life narrowed. What is pocket change for the wealthy is life changing for the poor and struggling.
How the hell can you watch this and not have a good time?
It's slow cinema for the people!
Some of the shots of this move had me transcending to another realm from sheer ecstasy. The cinematography is pursued with such playfulness and confidence.
The scene where the guy keeps driving past Nijima, first forward, then backward, and then forward again had me laughing my ass off. I love Kurosawa using these long shots to take the absurdity of a moment to the n'th degree.
What an amazing director. There's something to him nobody can match.
