  Horrendous attempt to distance Christianity from the European Colonial project. While the story itself is based on actual events - real missions which gave sanctuary to indigenous South Americans amidst a rampant Portuguese and Spanish slave trade - the sentiment that Christianity’s role was a wholly benign one is cynical and offensive.

  Decent acting, cinematography and a Ennio Morricone score do not conceal the hideousness of this propaganda piece.
