Mulholland Drive 2001
A mystery film usually has a central conceit, an understanding for the viewer to pursue. This film is different, the conceit of Rita's identity is a decoy. It gradually becomes apparent that there is no mystery to unravel as the film dissolves. Instead, there will be no coherent explanation, and my desire for understanding is left unsatisfied. Very fun to untangle this one, and it doesn't hold your hand at all. I should have been taking notes. No "quantum" gibberish in the movie, Carruth does a wonderful job sticking to reality and letting you fill in the gaps. Also nice to see characters not being stupid/cliched and instead making novel and interesting mistakes.
