home sick so enjoy my fun little essay about this movie :-) minor spoilers
a subdued yet thoroughly enjoyable film which humorously, then tragically, portrays something of the Czech national psyche during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, specifically surrounding Reinhard Heydrich’s assassination in 1942 (although not mentioned explicitly in the film, the antagonist Zedníček quotes from Heydrich directly during its climax).

“everything that is ugly… cruel… stupid… is your fault”
very well crafted film that didnt drag at all despite the runtime. felt weirdly similar to There Will Be Blood in the way it tries to convey a deep evil at the heart of white (and christian, mostly protestant but with a little bit of catholic thrown in for flavor this time) american industrialism. the rest of the film’s politics were a little murky; it definitely felt like a Holocaust allegory…
