Maybe it says a lot about my subconscious mind that this film lulled me into a deep sleep in the cinema. So I did miss a bit near the end, but overall it was a relatively fun gorry horror! Not enough Elijah Wood, though.

Some obviously heightened cinematic choices (the Newport folk festival performance goes from controversial to a riot..) but it really is a wonderful depiction of that fascinating period of musical history - the emergence of the "unwashed phenomenon, the original vagabond..." The amount of music in the film is it's strength, it truly makes you fall in love with these songs all over again.

Watched as part of BFI Flare 2021, because I wanted to support the festival and assumed gay soviet pilots during the Cold War would be a good time, but no amount of strong jawlines and uniforms could save this poorly written, cliche-riddled, achingly tired story of forbidden love. The film had no sense of threat (considering we were dealing with the KGB), the film was in English with bad Russian accents, there were a few dodgy wigs and CGI planes…

A short and sweet documentary following Kumu Hina, who lives life as the traditional indigenous third gender or "person in the middle" known as mahu. The non-Eurocentric definitions of non-gender conforming people is such a refreshing watch, though sadly the tolerance in modern-day Hawaii has shifted away from tradition. Though Kuma Hina is an interesting and likeable character, I felt the documentary was perhaps not long enough to properly explore the many themes (teaching, tradition, culture, living as mahu, marrital relationships and protection of Hawaiian lands) Still a worthwhile watch nonetheless.
