The Paperboy 2012
Muggy, sleazy, and downright gross. Lee Daniels’s direction builds toward a strong vision of gothic south that should be retroactively appreciated, at the very least for having Zac Efron’s pecs on display at any given chance. Macy Gray gives my favorite performance out of this stacked cast.

Sound of Metal 2019
A man's journey to find peace that's endlessly captivating because of Riz Ahmed's unimpeachable performance — nuanced and understated but very powerful. The sound design is impactful (the cacophony of noises heard through the implants is truly nightmarish). Olivia Cooke is excellent (her final scene with Ahmed is equally extremely sweet and heartbreaking). Lastly, Paul Raci: like the film itself, what a find.

Nomadland 2020
Chloé Zhao has made the first American masterpiece of this deeply strange decade. Her realist approach and a cast of non-actors and veterans seamlessly tell an educational yet fiercely emotionally resonating story that's as much about economic collapse as it is personal turmoil. It's hard to imagine anything more apt for 2020 than this poetic journey through the heartland — a time-cheating, judgment-free introspection equally filled with pain and new-found hope.
