  i bet watching this in an imax theater in 2016 hit SO hard

  on a technical level: really outstanding stuff from villeneuve and co (johansson’s score is unsurprisingly great, and young’s photography puts in a lot of work). on a plot level: i don’t know that the individual narrative of louise and hannah fully got there for me, the sapir-whorf hypothesis is misrepresented, and the geopolitical implications of russia’s and china’s treatment are… revealing. 

  but i can also feel myself…

  before we started the movie, i joked about how my very small problems made me feel like sisyphus. and then for 1 hr 47 mins colman domingo and clarence “divine eye” maclin beat me over the head with a cartoon club labeled “perspective”

  why do we create meaning? what good is the process independent of the product? what does it mean to build community and joy in an environment that extinguishes solidarity at every opportunity?

  men will literally join a community theater production of romeo and juliet rather than go to therapy

  sweet and full of heart! heavy-handed but immensely forgivable and moving and well-acted. i look forward to seeing more from both kupferers.
