It started out really strong, and there was a lot of potential for more philosophical dialogue, but I found Derek’s story to be underwhelming. The whole movie, I was hoping to see more of the high school teacher, who was the more interesting character.
More intense than I was anticipating, with poignant moments.
One thing I keep thinking about:
Compared to some of Sean Baker’s other films, which offer intimate quiet moments with the main characters throughout the movie, the audience doesn’t really get to know that much about Ani’s internal feelings until the very end. She seems powerful and in control, but also one dimensional, and mirrors her being on the job vs. off-the-job. This lack of emotional intimacy with the main character…
