So much about this is so beautiful. Really phenomenal performances all around, and direction that breathes so much life into all its characters. But not sure how I feel about the flash forwards at the end. The “happy ending” gestures towards a very conciliatory view of amnesty and reform politics—one that feels toothless, and dodges any real reckoning of Brazilian politics post-Bolsonaro.

Killers of the Flower Moon 2023
Such an interesting add to Scorsese's filmography. His other movies - Goodfellas, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, etc. - did so much great work within the symbols and structures of classic American genres. Something different happens here, though, with Scorsese foregrounding the symbols of the Western, police procedural, legal drama, etc., but refusing their structures. We want the FBI to save the day, but when they show up more than two hours into the movie, there's no relief.

The Battle of Algiers 1966
An absolutely perfect balancing act between the personal and the collective, the emotional and the political.
