Martin Freeman single-handedly saves what would otherwise be a quite mediocre trilogy

Anora 2024

The first act is completely gripping and thematically powerful - you really feel swept along on this journey with Ani, and Mikey Madison is brilliant. But the slightly odd change of speed when the Russians get involved, while very funny at points, seems to drag. Certain scenes are too long or feel misplaced, and it loses some of the pacing that make the first 45 minutes so good, never really regaining this and appearing to lose touch with where the story was going initially. Not sure it should have won the Oscar, but overall fun to watch.

The Brutalist 2024

A powerful, beautifully shot deconstruction of the American dream. The first half was amazing, as were Guy Pearce and Adrien Brody's performances. Fell apart for me slightly as it neared the end though, descending into something that felt a bit aimless and without direction. A couple of scenes in particular seemed especially clumsy and heavy-handed in their impact upon the general sentiment of the film. Perhaps this approach is what Corbet was going for - mirroring the characters' lives as they began to unravel - but for me it ultimately missed the mark, and I left feeling slightly disappointed.

A Complete Unknown 2024
Very enjoyable, teetering on visceral at times. I don’t see the “not another Hollywood biopic” and “nothing to glean” perspectives. The film gives a glimpse into Dylan’s life that manages to accessibly provide an insight into his rise to fame while preserving his mysticism, almost putting you in the place of one of the bodies whisked alongside him. The music and performances from the main actors were all excellent, remaining faithful to their inspirations while steering clear of caricature territory. Very powerful final few scenes that do justice to one of the most influential musical moments in history
