    Tunnels, elevators and portals lead down the rabbit hole deep underground into a fantastical world. A beautiful world where Wang is the true hero of the story, and his sidekick Jack Burton is subverted and undermined as the traditional white male American hero at every opportunity. Everyone else is better than Jack, and they don’t need really need him. Anything he does accomplish is usually by accident and all of this is conveyed in the most comical and visual way. What a blast.

    It's not bad but it's also not great, just sort of in the middle. Everyone puts in good work though there's something off about the whole thing. The film overwhelms in style and ambition with little reason as it doesn't feel connected to the underwhelming content and overly-stated themes.

    The "long take" approach feels increasingly unnecessary as the film progresses, and cuts would have been preferable in comparison to some of the lame transitions from take to take. The good…
