Dang this is pretty much a perfect movie: slow, observant and brooding while making great use of the vignette format to tell tight powerful and compelling stories that combine to one of the most powerful meditations on art, faith, class, humanity and purpose ever committed to film. Few pieces of art so boldly take on the fundamental question of art - its whys and for what purposes and it's place in a world so full of pain and endless bouts of doubt.

I think i liked it even more on a second viewing. I love the form and the use of its sort of documentary perspective, the assortment of cast and its representation of so many types and perspectives. It's a beautiful setting that is also beautifully ugly and simple. It poses simple but poignant questions on the limits and functions of modern society, individuality, freedom and class and gender but takes a firm and carefully natural approach that is intimate and powerful.

Made almost entirely of archival footage. Really tells a more complex story of Y2K then I grew up with (I was 9) in that the legitimate issues were present, and were handled by competent management and administration; this feels radical compared to our ability to solve present problems. It of course also spotlights the hysteria in many shapes and forms, and in part captures the transition from the militia and antigovernment culture of the 90s to the mainstreaming of radical antigovernment values through among other things. Well done, must have crawled through so many videos and spent so much time piecing it together.

I read the book shortly before watching. I really have no idea what I'd think of this movie if I had not. It just barely scratches the surfaces, and some scenes would have been downright confusing to me if I didn't have the knowledge from the book. That being said, as a supplement to the book it's awesome. Really brings to life some of the most powerful scenes, and Burt Lancaster is actually perfect casting. He brings all of that…
