On my second watch, I can say that this is easily the best musical adaptation made (at least in recent history), not just for its accuracy to the source material but for its overall appeal to the general public.

As a theater kid, it hurts to say that this film came very close to exceeding the stage play but I was absolutely blown away by the grand production, the stunning choreography, the precise pacing and just the overall scale of the whole movie. Everything new about the world and its characters served to enhance the story further and it brought Oz to life in ways that a stage set could not.
They gave the witch too much screentime, enough that my mom (a centrist without much knowledge on both history and politics) felt bad for her and her family.
