This film is great for many reasons which have been better expressed by others. But two things: I have a soft spot for these big 1960s international coproductions. And it's remarkable how quickly the horror of fifty brave men getting brutally murdered fades once Steve McQueen gets his baseball back.

That line hit me like a punch to the gut in a film that, up until then, starts off as a silly earnest misfire. Like an entire movie made from the childhood flashback in Annie Hall but less Jewish.
