The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2023
Very basic and straightforward, but very well done. I would've preferred more of the excellent game remix music and less of the pop-culture needle-drops.
Doesn't go above and beyond in any way, but hits every note you'd expect and does so with a surprising amount of grace.

The Menu 2022
Really well executed thriller. Great performances, surprisingly funny, and genuinely thought provoking at times. The theme is incredibly heavy handed, but in a way that adds to, rather than detracts from, the overall experience, to the point where the film even shows some self-awareness of its own melodrama.
Most interesting film I've seen in a while. My only complaint is that there was probably room to go even further with the premise, but sometimes you just have to appreciate the quality of what's actually in front of you.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness 2022
The most I’ve ever been disappointed by a Marvel movie. Things come alive in the brief moments where director Sam Raimi clearly had his hands on the wheel, injecting an unsettling, almost dreamlike feel to the cinematography, but it doesn’t last. The vast majority of the film is stock standard MCU, entirely mechanical visuals that never go beyond just showing the character we’re meant to focus on.
