This movie has no right being as good as it is. Amanda Bynes is bro’d out in drag at the 12 minute mark, maybe one of the best teen comedy fight scenes I’ve ever seen in the bathroom of a dilettante training school, and Vinnie Jones rejecting ableism and misogyny left and right.

Movies like this are made for me: big fight scenes, manipulative use of hit songs, Gosling being a silly goose, and yet… this just landed with a dull thud. Overly-long, needless unserving complexity, and worst of all, heartless. I really wanted to like it, but just kept wishing I was watching The Nice Guys.

Back to a lot of what makes an Alien movie great… sympathetic folks stuck in the middle of extraterrestrial attacks and corporate bullsh. While it doesn’t capture the same giant character development of the first movie, there is plenty of magic here (and fan service for those who want that).

Geena Davis can do anything - including a Die Hard movie apparently. The plot is completely non-sensical, everything blows up, guns don’t need to be reloaded. But who cares, because Shane Black can write one-liners that are eternal and Geena/Sam Jackson can deliver them effortlessly. The thing this movie does better than all of its peers at the time (Jerry Bruckheimer’s whole 90s catalogue) is that I actually care about the two leads. Geena deals with a duality in existence…
