I don’t understand why this film would be made with no visual acknowledgement of the effect on Japanese people and with such minimal female roles. Thinking about the counter argument that ‘it’s a particular historical moment and it would be too much to go into all the other things that were happening at the time’, I get that but then if it is such a historically important moment why would the film not be being shown in Japan. I think the execution of the film is great but I the particular interpretation of history is reductive and crass.
