With its sharp screenplay, slick performances, and high-speed editing, Black Bag is the most electric movie of the year so far. This whole thing feels like a challenge for Soderbergh to fit as much compelling drama and character work into a ninety minute timespan as possible, and it’s a resounding success. Plotted with flawless intricacy, this is a story that invites the audience to lose themselves in a web of conspiracy and secrecy, using matters of national security as a backdrop to an almost Agatha Christie-esque mystery. Endlessly watchable, and surprisingly unpredictable given how much foreshadowing there is.
