Not nearly as deep or subversive as it thinks it is -- there are levels to this. Just really falls flat by the time it's all said and done.

    Pretty good Congress joke though.

Kind of ironic that one of (if not) the best and most faithful cinematic adaptations of the Gospel comes from a Marxist, atheist director. Granted, almost the entirety of the dialogue is lifted directly from the source text (mostly the Gospel according to Matthew, with some scattered snippets from the prophet Isaiah). Made on a shoestring budget with non-professional actors, yet it remains a moving film nonetheless. Cinematography is fantastic and the production design is pretty solid as well. Editing…

    ★★★

Bong is really in his bag on this one. Like all of his films, Mickey 17 has a lot of social commentary. Some might say too much, as it never really seems to find its footing as it juggles so many different ideas and tones. Additionally, I never felt like there was anything particular insightful or clever (so much exposition 😭) explored in its themes.

However, Robert Pattinson is a delight and absolutely kills it. The silliness of his character really made this a salvageable watch.
