This movie broke my heart. I really, really wanted it to work. My dislike for the film is entirely encompassed in the Liberia flashbacks.

I think this film is charming. The story is simple, an Indian princess remembers her family’s glory days. She celebrates her father, whom we assume to be dead, as a saint.
She is juxtaposed against an Englishman whose account tells a different story to her glowing rendition.
By the end of the movie, I felt a slight sense of pity. There is a suspension of reality for the rich and famous. Almost like being in a cult. The bump when one hits the ground must be shocking. James Ivory did a great job, and in just under an hour.
