Fallen Leaves 2023
Probably my favorite director. Everything he does is great. There is no one else doing these deeply empathic tales of desperate people just trying to carve out their lives. They really convey a love of humanity that very few films can nail. Ikiru does and that’s a one of a kind film. Kaurismaki has built a whole career on that vibe. I love how deadpan and minimal the acting always is and they still make me cry.

The acting was good in this movie that kinda went nowhere. I’m not sure if they were trying to scandalize him with the orgy voyeurism stuff. It didn’t add anything to the plot really. Is this a simple character portrait movie?
I couldn’t help thinking about all the Dali prints floating around out there in cruise ship galleries. People are still pitching them as investments. I wish they’d made the movie about that.
