What the hell was this? Poor Jamie Lee. Kevin Kline is horrible.

I’ve seen this several times, and I love it. Highly watchable and well made. Every time I’m struck by how flat the lighting is in the daytime scenes but how provocative it is during the nighttime scenes. The writing is top notch kooky 40s banter, and the performances are big in a way that movies just weren’t after this. The costuming and scenic design both speak to the social trajectory, but I really wonder about the necessity of that flat…

Beautiful, moving, and thought-provoking meditation on growing old in a career that derides experience. I was taken by how Shelly’s inner life was completely the same as her outer life - and how this still didn’t render her one dimensional. Jamie Lee Curtis is one of the few actors that lives in her characters so deeply. Although the movie takes place in maybe four locations (theater, house, restaurant, outside, rarely elsewhere) it felt freeing for the characters to be the landscape rather than some chaotic mashup of Vegas tropes. Restraint pays off. Excellent movie.

Beautiful to look at and well-made. Production design is extravagant and luxurious. No moment felt forced, and the three hours felt much shorter. The romantic themes were full of passion and devoid of schmaltz. In the world of the film, romantic connection is a scientific fact and those who betray it must be stopped. But by the time we get to the point - vengeance upon three enemies - none of them feel as satisfying as I expected.
