The Substance 2024
i watched this on election night and not liking it that much after much anticipation was def the second least enjoyable part of the evening
i don’t have many thoughts here because the movie didn’t leave room for any — my 1/2 full review is not bc i think the movie’s bad, it’s not.
but i have a renewed belief that short films need to have more of an institutional presence. imo this thing would SING if it was 45-50 minutes long.

the movie is equal parts dopey and horrifying, gonzo and emotionally compelling. I think frequently about the line between pain + pleasure simply being folded together into the umbrella of “stimulation.”

yet also has some of the goofiest images ever committed to screen. The fat glasses cenobyte! And I’m pretty sure you can see the rig + mount holding up the maggot monster. Part of the enduring appeal of the movie is its relentless tonal whiplash — if it was more consistent, it’d be easier to forget.
