    Famous for a nine-minute rape scene and brutal violence, I was apprehensive about watching this at Doc Films, but I felt my past life as a YouTube content moderator had prepared me to consume such violence.

    I think that much of the appeal of this movie, like its progenitor La Piscine (1969), is based on erotics. Except, unlike in the case of the original, the erotics of this movie are entirely unmoving. While watching I was convinced that the 1990s simply could not be sexy. Objects that figure in this movie include two-liter diet sodas, large tubs of yogurt, large and clunky laptops and chargers. (I then realized that this was made in 2003, but maybe 2003 in France is like the 1990s in the United States.)
