At some point in my life I had watched this, and so I watched it again. One of those films where you remember the first third but you’re not sure how it went because the rest is disposable and forgettable.

Riding a 90’s high from the first viewing of Linklater’s Suburbia.

There are points where you feel the script running out of ideas. It throws in and glosses over teen suicide and eating disorders like they are 90’s staples.

Somewhere along the way I read this was a “must watch” and saw some other related hype.

Average crime thriller and nothing special with an overly long run time.

Initial premise of small town police corruption was an interesting set up but wore thin. The film gets ever more convoluted as it goes along.

So we get an introduction of the hero being a close combat martial arts expert followed by a nice action sequence. That’s all we really get in terms of martial arts for the whole film.

    Gladiator II

    ★★★★

The original Gladiator was always interesting to me in that it wasn't something I particularly was "wowed" by in the cinema but it had garnered a lot of Oscar nominations. The effects were noticeable with similar criticisms of historical accuracy.

Take it all with a grain of salt as this is fiction. This is cinema.

Ridley Scott has a varied career but one filled with historical pieces and large scale world building that I'd say is unmatched in modern cinema.…
