    So much fun

There are moments that stick with you long after the film is over. Especially that damn (but amazing) song. I never thought I’d have a Barbie related song stuck in my head more than Aquas. For all the joy it brings though, something doesn’t fully sit right. It’s like a film that aims to get across a coherent message, but it’s never clear what that message actually is. The various plot strands get a bit jumbled up, the motivations of characters slightly lost, the worlds colliding more than planned.

Saying that, the feeling you’re left with is simply: It’s fantastic

    Something to really sit with

The first thing to notice in this movie is the relentless pacing. It hurtles you through decades of history, pushed forwards without a breath using the quick dialogue, fast editing and near constant score. It’s the best way to keep engagement during a film which is mainly a bunch of men in a room talking. It also means when there finally is a pause it’s even more impactful and ends up forcing you to look…

    More than just a gimmick.
To only go on about the technical marvel would be to do this film a disservice. The fact that it’s all done in one take is amazing when you stop to think about it, but what’s more amazing is the fact that that doesn’t hold the film back from a great story in and of itself.
Starting out as something akin to the before trilogy, there’s a serious side swerve just as you settle in…

It is definitely a Wes Anderson film.

All the usual aspects are there, and with an ever increasing cast size, it’s even more impressive that a coherent plot is in place. However it does at times feel too sprawling, too all over the place, too pleased with itself. I came out of it thinking there was something I didn’t get, which is never a nice feeling.

It’s fun, full of Andersonisms and a relatively light watch. It’s nothing more than that though.
