Kaijim

Not a film bro, but a scarier, more sinister thing.

Liked it well enough in the first half even with its overuse of voiceover narration (Pattinson makes it work by being a goofy little weirdo), but started to lose me the more it went on. As a satire, it's not only paper-thin and kind of exhausting, but it also exists in this weird space between not being zany enough nor grounded enough, its tones don't compliment but neutralize each other. The movie still moves due to its comedic quirky sensibilities,…

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

    ★★★★½

Carrying the spirit of the delightful recent Looney Tunes Cartoons, this film that's part waterfall of gags and part sci-fi/horror hommage is everything I could hope for, a mix made in heaven to appeal to me specifically. Also certainly the greatest and the most beautifully animated film Warner Bros has released since the freaking Iron Giant, but also one of the best-looking animated Hollywood efforts in recent memory overall. It sports some surprising amount of heart too.
    It's a shame…

    Gridman Universe

    "Who cares if we're artificial?"
"You're the only species with the power to believe fabrications"

A metafictional celebration of everything Gridman, mainly of SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon, but all things related to the character get at least a little nod in here. As such, this movie could very easily become the very simple fanservice extravaganza that one would expect it to be, and in some ways it is. But it's aware of that status, and it's in constant conversation with it.…

    In the Fire

Slowburn without suspense, thriller without tension, and drama without substance.
A film that never keeps you guessing, and that muddles its themes thanks to clumsy execution and baffling writing choices that simply contradict the intended message.
The main performers are clearly trying, and there are some nice-looking landscape shots, but they don't save the movie from being a slog of endless repetition and no emotion nor revelation.
