Sabotage 1936

Maybe rating this too highly but I was very impressed with this, it's so sober and ugly and so well crafted in the way you expect a Hitchcock film to be. Has to be one of the darkest Hitchcock films I've seen so far. Also shoutout to the totally unexpected bit parts for Charles Hawtree and the guy who played the Soviet ambassador in Dr Strangelove. The acting here is also pretty great for the 30s.

The Man Who Knew Too Much 1934

I know it's aged more because it's a 30s film and obviously Hitchcock isn't at his full proficiency yet, but this is still really good idk, I liked it a lot! It's interesting to see the same ideas that he'd later really perfect in the remake, but there's also a lot about this that I prefer to the remake. At a lean 75 minutes it obviously has no such length issues the remake does, and personally I felt the stakes…

Hobson's Choice 1954
Don't have a lot of complicated thoughts on this but I will say I really liked it, filled me with a lot of warm feelings. Lots of interesting filmmaking on show for what is on paper quite a basic sentimental comedy. Interested in checking out the rest of David Lean's work to see how this tracks with it, as it's nothing like the other Lean pictures I've seen. Laughton is outstanding as always, the accent was a big surprise to me, he holds it pretty darn well, interesting contrast to his usual style.

Secret Honor 1984
I'm absolutely endlessly in love with this film, actually mathematically perfect script and performance. Philip Baker Hall should get more respect for pulling this off.
