Let's start with the positives. Visually, as with all Miyazaki's films, it was sublime. Every scene was brought to life with rich colours and delicious detail, from the claustrophobic streets of WWII Tokyo and the vast, bracing expanses of the Japanese Inaka, to the 'other' world of whimsy which walks a fine line between charming and terrifying as the film progresses.
