one of the most beautiful queer-coded films i’ve ever seen. with gorgeous animation and silly fun to change the tides up between the emotional undercurrent of the film, luca perfectly captures the feeling of the best friend you’re kinda in love with as a young gay kid, the confusion, the fear of being different & hiding.. despite it using sea monster metaphors to do it!

this film was a mindfuck, but in such an unsettling, genuinely sad and BEST of ways. it gives you the perfect picture of a mental illness gone untreated, yet also makes you question if it’s mental illness at all. the juxtaposition of alien abduction/mental illness is cleverly and successfully used to continuously confuse the audience, and the filmmakers take every opportunity to make you rethink everything you think you know.

rian johnson does a masterclass in mystery during this film, not to mention beautiful blocking & camera work that can seem simple enough but add to the dynamic of the script & actors & gives you so much to pay attention to that you get swept up in the world. the ensemble kills but but ana de armas shines, even against brilliant seasoned actors like chris evans, michael shannon, jamie lee curtis & daniel craig. so so unbelievably good.
