    brilliant.

    the gendered voyeurism that shapes the whole narrative and tells the story of these girls through its well-meaning condescension is such a powerful choice. the fragility of youth, children as a marginalized class, the fickleness of perspective.

    i love it more and i relate to it less than i did when i watched it at 15. so!

    beautiful, both visually and narratively.

    this film approaches art from its very root; art is about passion. without a passion for art, there is no motivation for it. there is no place for it. there is no meaning in it. at a time where art theft through ai and the practices of late stage capitalism has become commonplace, art that is made to be politically direct, culturally relevant, and socially stimulating is very important.

    i loved how they explored the life-cycle of art through different stages & made it feel as important to these characters as it feels to us in real life.

    i thought the sex scenes being cut into with moments of romy’s domestic life with her husband and children were interesting; maybe it was an expression of her shame bleeding over or maybe it was the movie tempting the viewers to shame her in light of the juxtaposition. 

    there was a lot of messaging of “it’s ok for women to seek sexual fulfillment” through certain, random (but not) lines about vulnerability being a strength or the daughter’s relationship vaguely mirroring…
