the cinematography is distracting & the story doesn’t feel fully fleshed out/explored, but the acting is pretty great

really love the composition in this and the stunning, vast landscapes, as well as the juxtaposition between the two stories. the italian dub of jean-pierre léaud is so obnoxious. a movie shrouded in metaphor and indulgent in its themes, but overall charming and critical of the excessive pursuit of wealth and fascism, sooo how could i not like it?

poignant and captivating, an enthralling performance by angelina jolie. i didn’t check the time nor look away, not once. it was breathtaking. the cinematography, every bit of opera, the flashes of maria’s life as she awaits her untimely death, everything so beautiful. there is nothing more tragic than the thing you love most being ripped away from you. that’s what maria is about, and i felt it so deeply.
