A Different Man 2024
A movie that turns around and stares at its audience. I loved the way it used meta narratives to create layered meanings and force the audience to think about how we all interact with disfigurement and disability. Really darkly funny too, and impossible not to love Adam Pearson.

One of my favorite film soundtracks of all time (Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis you will always be famous), and props to the fake violin/cello playing that doesn’t make me want to rip my hair out. You’d be shocked how many actors/film editors can’t be bothered to make the movement of the bows and fingers actually line up with the audio track.

I was maybe overly distracted with small quibbles over plot elements (SET THE TOWER ON FIRE NOW!! YOU HAD FIRE BOMBS THE WHOLE TIME!!!), but the animation was really beautiful, if a little stiff at times. Always happy to see and support 2D hand-drawn animation, tired of seeing the same Tangled-esque CGI models in every Disney/Pixar studio animation. This is PG-13, but still also like anything moving towards sophisticated and beautiful adult animation.
