I read the source material not too long ago and this is a perfect example of how a film adaptation can change things for the better while doing justice to the original characters. The movie added so much more depth and lore in a fun but impactful way, especially in the second half. Had an absolute blast watching this.
Will also be saying "if you see something, 💅slay💅 something" whenever I ride the TTC now.
Bandham is heart-wrenching. The dynamic between the ever-talented Sivaji Ganesan and baby Shalini in this movie is yet to be replicated in Tamil cinema. The film explores themes of familial love and its boundaries when tested against traditional, closed-minded mentalities.
I'm always impressed by how well Shalini performs here at such a young age. Sivaji is undoubtedly the heart of the movie but Shalini is what makes it beat (probably shouldn't have made a heart-related comment oh well).

Is it a bit cliche? Yes. Does it have too many parallels to Titanic? Also yes.
But I still love this movie SO much. The perfect blend of humour that actually hits, enriching set design and cinematography, one of the best Tamil soundtracks I've ever heard, and a genuinely gripping romance draped against a politically and emotionally charged era. I've seen Madrasapattinam several times but it really does still hold up for me, and will always have a special place…
