Started out March with a bang. This movie has altered my psyche (tone indicator: good). I knew what it was about but I still wasn’t prepared. Like why am I out here hootin and hollering at the end of this film?! In the middle of my Cinemark?? Why am I scared and laughing?? Honestly, good cinema can really only make you feel that way.

I don’t know, maybe it’s me? Maybe I’m the problem? In comparison to other 90s black classics, this one was only ok. There’s so many plot holes - like, is homeboy still out there on the highway with his hairbrush? There’s simply no closure on a lot of the subplots of this film and they didn’t do enough to develop the characters fully. Some dramatic points just felt so inorganic. Again, maybe it’s me? I’d like to be proven wrong? But at the end of the day, this was only ok.

Bruh, have you ever seen someone and been like “he’s that GUY” ??? Because that’s what it was like the entire movie. I am a simp for Maximus, just like the rest of Rome. I am no better than anyone else.

There’s quite a bit of controversy with the movie and understandably so. I can definitely see where people’s critiques were coming from on a portrayal and script perspective for sure. I’ll have to give it McConaughey though. His commitment to the weight loss and embodying this role was pretty freakin impressive. I’m giving it a 4 as it left me pretty engaged with the film the whole time.
