Grew up with a mother obsessed with Robbie Williams so this was a very interesting idea (and I was at the Albert Hall gig at the end they used to film bits!).
This was always going to be divisive from the off with it being a CGI monkey but it makes sense too there, and it was super enjoyable if not cliche-cinema-dance-sequence-musical.
Solid watch.
I went into this film, right at the end of its cinematic release run, with the knowledge that it’s been making queer and trans people cry, and seemingly not affecting cis people. Immediately, this has my attention.
I also deliberately wanted to go in as blind as possible. I knew it was set in the 90s, and is about a TV show.
Now, ashamedly I thought this was just going to be another A24 distro-duced fare with nice impactful lighting,…
Could have been great, had the tone set perfectly from the beginning, but the biggest downfall of this film is that it was already done better in the first two movies.
Everything was pretty neatly tied up though which is nice for a film that’s meant to be between two movies. Had a really strong “oh nice!” reaction to the retro-futuristic screen designs and ship voices.
A film that genuinely is style over substance.
