    TÁR

    ★★★

A restrained and veiled performance by Cate Blanchett, who is tasked with playing the psychopathic Lydia/Linda Tár.

While her previous characters have been more outspoken, extroverted, or effusive, it’s interesting to see her take on such a conniving, unlikeable genius. And whereas a typical anti-hero story tends to either let the character get away with everything or be killed off, the writing is unique in how it analyzes the fall from grace of such a iconic person (in the movie’s world).

However, there are long stretches between the loud, award-show-clip-worthy moments where not much seems to be happening that require a certain level of patience.

An impressive and heartbreaking performance by Brendan Fraser.

Since the screenplay is adapting a play, the location of the film is unfortunately limited to Charlie‘s apartment. But with this constraint, it allows the characters to have surprisingly nuanced conversations. The writing is well done where certain motives or meanings behind lines aren’t initially obvious, and certain details are dispensed well and naturally at key times.

    Elvis

    ★★★

A solid performance by Austin Butler that is unfortunately stifled by the narrative structure of “jumping through the years” from the 50’s through the 70’s. Additionally, there is an odd amount of focus on Tom Hanks’ character, the Colonel (who serves as the narrator), which takes away from Butler’s screen time and deflates the story every time things start to pick up
