I enjoyed this all-too-real buddy adventure even more than I expected. Not only were the performances outstanding by both leads, but the screenplay was perfectly crafted.
I think the relatability to the context is what makes this somewhat simple premise work. We’ve all had a relationship with someone that makes us cringe and question as much as it inspires us to be better. The film beautifully articulates how very human it is to adore someone even if they can be a real pain.
There are great films about the trans experience. There are great films about Mexico. There are great musicals. Sadly, this film didn’t succeed in any of those three categories.
The premise was strong and the idea of a character transforming themselves (literally and figuratively) often plays out beautifully. This film was oddly made worse by making it a musical. Had it existed as a crime drama, it might have packed more of a punch, but the singing was so sparse…
Stunning animation that builds an immersive world and offers an almost meditative escape into a wordless story. There are some scenes left to be interpreted, but the overall message of the film is one of unity and the beauty in finding out who your friends are.
While the animation is consistent and breathtaking, the hard edge vectors and shifting color blocks on the main characters proved a bit distracting.
