Nearly 24 hours after watching this I feel I just about have the words. What a masterpiece. A fantastic depiction of loneliness, sorrow and heartache. The dialogue, the lighting, editing and the camerawork is simply to be marvelled at. I’m glad I saw plenty of Lynch interviews before this because I’m happy with never understanding this film, but simply experiencing it. The sleep I had after watching this was the most stressful, restless and intense sleep I’d had for some time. Who ever thought that a film depicting a never ending nightmare would be nightmare inducing?

Nosferatu 2024
I can see why this isn’t for some, but I loved it. Eggars’ direction is fantastic, always leading you where you least want to go desperate to see what’s out of frame. Hoult here doing what he’s not properly done since skins- be a whiny little freak boy. Everything about Orlok’s design and portrayal was great, subverting the modern idea that vampires are sexy. That dude was fucking gross.

Joker: Folie à Deux 2024
If the first film was a decent homage to Scorese’s best work, then this was an awkward interpretation of some of his worst. The performances were great, I liked the different levels Phoenix went to compared to the first, showed real character growth. Gaga & Gleeson were also bringing the best they could out of limited material. Some decent use of colour impressed me as well. But this film seemed ashamed of the musical numbers; which could’ve shown a sharp contrast…

Mistress America 2015
I cannot help but be a Noah Baumbach enthusiast. Near his sharp, hilarious, scathing best, this one is one of my favourites of his. Greta Gerwig shows her range and leading charisma, I also feel that Baumbach’s best writing is always together with her (see also Frances Ha and WB’s biggest draw ever). There’s not many who write ensemble dialogue scenes like him, this one showcases that talent. Enjoyed every minute of this flick, my only gripe is that it isn’t longer!
