Very traditional in its form. Shot-reverse shot throughout. Bale is constantly backlit like he is Ingrid Bergman. Hints that the themes of the film are built into the very fabric of American film and society. Interesting performance at the center but not quite the masterpiece it is advertised as.

I am giving this a full star bump after this rewatch. The editing is fascinating; the cross-cutting disorients you, but doesn’t confuse you, which is very difficult. The ending still falls a little flat in my opinion, but overall a really solid film that laid the foundation for modern blockbuster horror.
